Karen Carruthers, Executive Director


Karen Carruthers was appointed Executive Director of the Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board (AFSRB) March 1, 2016. Karen has served as the government liaison to the AFSRB for nearly eight years, so she has been involved in the happenings of the AFSRB for quite some time.

Karen had responsibility for the Cemetery and Funeral Service legislation in her previous role.  In addition, she has served on the executive for the North American Death Care Regulators Association, which included cemetery and funeral regulators from Canada and the United States.

Karen’s previous experience and interest in funeral legislation makes her new role a great fit.

Karen grew up on a farm north of Edmonton and maintains an acreage on the original farm. An avid horse lover 


Del August, Inspector/Investigator


Del is a retired Sergeant of the Edmonton Police Service having served 25 years in a variety of role including: Patrol, Surveillance Unit, Alcohol & Breath Testing Unit, Vice, Drug Unit and part of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT). He also served 6 years in the Edmonton Police Association as a Director. After retiring he worked for the Government of Alberta as an investigator in Maintenance Enforcement and in Service Alberta.

He moved on and worked for Westjet and at Rogers as an Alcohol Compliance Supervisor Before joining the AFSRB in October of 2017.

Del grew up on a farm east of Edmonton and currently lives in Sherwood Park.
